A root canal is a treatment used to save a tooth that is badly decayed and/or infected. Nerve and pulp, the soft area within the center of the tooth, can become irritated, inflamed, and infected due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures on a tooth, large fillings, a crack or chip in the tooth, or trauma to the face. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed.
Root canal procedures have the reputation of being painful. In reality, most patients report that the procedure itself is no more painful than having a filling placed. The discomfort experienced in the period leading up to dental care is truly the painful period of time, not the root canal procedure itself.
The root canal procedure should relieve the pain you feel. Until your root canal procedure is completely finished – that is to say, the permanent filling is in place and/or the crown is placed, it is wise to minimize chewing on the tooth under repair. This step will help avoid re-contamination of the interior of the tooth and also may prevent a fragile tooth from breaking before the tooth can be fully restored. For the first few days following completion of treatment, the tooth may feel sensitive due to natural tissue inflammation, especially if there was pain or infection before the procedure.
As far as oral health care is concerned, brush and floss as you regularly would and see your dentist at normally scheduled intervals. The final step of the root canal procedure is application of a restoration such as a crown, to cover and protect the tooth.

I've been visiting Culebra North Dental for over 20 years. During my last routine cleaning, the hygienist noticed an inflamed area on my gums, which Dr. Schroeder determined required a root canal. Culebra North scheduled an appointment with an endodontist Monarch dental within a few days, likely saving me pain and inconvenience. I'm very happy with all the great work Culebra North has done for me.
If you are big baby and afraid of the dentist then this is the place for you! I recently was told I needed my first ever root canal awhile back and had been putting it off due to the obvious reasons and my mother, being a patient herself, recommended me seeing Dr. Quillian and the staff at Culebra North for the procedure. The staff in the front are first class professionals and are extremely helpful in setting up your appointment. They also are very easy to talk to over the phone and courteous as well. Once in the back, the dental assistants and hygienists are very professional in establishing your maximum comfort and prepping you for your procedure. Dr. Quillian then enters and explains everything he is going to do, complete with illustrations and takes the time to get to know you as a patient. I explained to him he was dealing with the worlds biggest wimp in that chair and he laughed and assured me I wouldn't feel a thing. With over 30 years experience of dealing with wimps, DR Q explained I would not feel a thing and we started talking about sports and baseball....During this time, DR Q actually administered the sedative shots to my tooth area before I even knew he was doing it and their was no pain involved with the shots.... Right away I knew this guy was real good!!..This initially gave me so much confidence in Dr Q and what he was doing in my mind, which settled big time now, that the rest of the procedure would now be a breeze..The best part about this entire procedure ( I still have one more) is that Dr Q explained everything I was going to feel throughout the entire process , step-by step, always ending with , you should NOT feel any discomfort ..and if you do raise your hand and we will stop. This helped in calming my nerves almost to the point of almost falling asleep several times in the chair during the procedure...At no time did I FEEL ANY PAIN during my first root canal and this clinic certainly dispelled many of the myths I had foolishly read online the night before about root canal procedures and the pain involved. If you are a big baby like I am am and need a filling or root canal or any other dental work done in the future , I strongly recommend DR Q and the staff at Culebra North Dental....they are awesome and have sold me on being a lifelong patient!
Great place. People are awesome. They don't push unnecessary treatments. Willing to work with you.
