When you’re straightening your smile with braces, there are things that can affect the orthodontic journey and even hinder your progress to that perfect smile. One of those things is eating the wrong foods and drinking the wrong beverages during treatment. Eating the wrong foods and drinking the wrong beverages can damage the appliance and even harm the smile. So, it’s important to follow the rules regarding food and beverages during treatment. Our dentist, Dr. Jonathan E. Quillian, is happy to tell you all about those rules on our blog today.

-Don’t eat sticky and chewy foods (These foods can engulf the brackets and pull them off the teeth)

-Don’t chew gum (Gum can do the same thing as sticky and chewy foods)

-Don’t eat popcorn (The popcorn hulls can get stuck between the teeth and can damage your wires)

-Don’t eat nuts, seeds or chunky peanut butter (These foods can force the wires out of place when you chew them)

-Don’t eat thick or crunchy foods (These foods can pull the brackets loose, especially if you bite into them with your front teeth)

-Don’t eat corn on the cob (Biting into things can pull the brackets off the teeth)

-Don’t eat beef jerky (Tearing hard foods like jerky can damage the braces)

-Don’t drink soda (Soda can wear down the tooth enamel and cause cavities because it is typically full of sugar and acid)
