Did you know that you can have an allergy to your toothpaste? While these allergies are not common, you still may want to be aware of the signs and symptoms you should watch for, especially since these allergies could have an impact on your entire body. In fact, recognizing the signs of toothpaste allergies may be important because diagnosing these allergies can be tricky.
You see, a toothpaste allergy may cause a rash known as contact dermatitis. Similarly, toothpaste allergies may cause perioral dermatitis, which is a red rash that peels and can be mistaken for acne. Toothpaste allergies can also lead to canker sores. Unfortunately, these issues can appear anywhere in your mouth or along your gum line.
Similarly, you may have to cope with cheilitis, which causes irritation, cracking, and dryness in your lips. Sadly, toothpaste allergies can also cause respiratory problems, hives, itching, red or watery eyes, gum inflammation, and even anaphylactic shock.
Fortunately, there are a few things you can avoid if you’re interested in avoiding these problems. For instance, cinnamon and mint could be the cause your problems. Similarly, preservatives, foaming agents, fluoride, and some oils could also cause allergic reactions. Luckily, if you’re able to identify the cause of your reaction, you’ll be able to choose a toothpaste without it.
If you are experiencing any of these issues, our dentist, Dr. Jonathan E. Quillian, and our team can help. If you are interested in scheduling an appointment with us, please don’t hesitate to contact Culebra North Dental Care at 210-761-5452. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
